Etude House Play 101 Stick Contour Duo makes contouring your face as easy as swiping mascara on your eyelashes!
Stories From a Curator is a column by Charlotte Cho, the curator and cofounder of Soko Glam. As a licensed esthetician and the author of The Little Book of Skin Care, Cho gives a glimpse into her discovery process and what brands and products make the cut for the curated site.
My day-to-day makeup routine involves 3 simple steps: winged cat eyeliner, two quick pumps of the eyelash curler and a final swipe of mascara to keep it in place.
Clearly, my simple makeup style is far from Kardashians’ full-faced makeup look and I will be the first to admit that I am intimidated by Kim’s signature contouring technique. But that doesn’t stop me from silently lurking through Instagram at night to see what looks can be achieved when highlighting and contouring so expertly.
When going through my Etude House haul, I grabbed a chubby little stick called the Etude House Play 101 Stick Contour Duo. The dual highlighter and shading stick looked so easy and playful that I felt like not even I could mess it up.
So armed with the stick, a handful of YouTube video tutorials and using my own set of (clean) fingertips, I was pleasantly surprised at the result. No, I did not have a transformative Kim K experience, but I also wasn’t aiming for that.
What resulted was a face that looked more sculpted—the angles that needed more definition were a bit more chiseled, while other areas of my face looked softer where it needed to be, and my whole face just generally looked more balanced and enhanced. The best part was that I didn’t have to pile on layers and layers of product to get me there.
How To Use The Etude House Play 101 Stick Contour Duo
Trust me: It is not nearly as hard as it may sound. Watch the quick Soko Glam tutorial video below to see exactly how easy it is to contour with the Etude House Play 101 Stick Contour Duo :
Step 1: Contour
・ Use the darker contouring shade to draw a large number “3” alongside the hairline and temple.
・ Trace the sides of your nose. If you have a little round button nose like me, you can draw it all the way down to the center of your nose so that it can look more pointy.
Step 2: Highlight
・ Using the highlighter, draw a small C along your inner brow to lower lash line, around both eyes.
・ In between your eyebrows, draw a circle and extend a line down the bridge of your nose.
・ Draw an inverted 7, from underneath the eye to the end of your smile line.
・ Draw a tiny v above the cupid’s bow and on the chin. Then with the tools you were born with (your clean, fingertips) just blend it in the way you feel most comfortable with.
None of the steps (except the blending) are mandatory, so experiment and see what works best for you. You also don’t really need a blender, brush or a sponge–that’s how easy it is to swipe, blend and go!
