How to Get Your Oily Skin Under Control in the Summer

By July 26, 2018

Summer is one of my favorite seasons. Vacations, beach days, and lazy Sunday brunches in the sun? Yes, please. But, with all that glorious heat comes oily, sweaty, and congested skin. That is, unless you adjust your routine accordingly for the season. Here, I’m sharing four products that will help keep your skin clear and oil at bay.

Erborian Black Cleansing Oil

It may sound counterproductive to put an oil-based product on your skin when you’re already oily, but trust me on this! Oil cleansing is the most important step when it comes to removing excess oil from your skin. Remember: oil cleanses oil. The Erborian Black Cleansing Oil is a great option as it’s formulated with a high concentration of charcoal, one of the most effective natural ingredients for fighting excess sebum production, detoxifying the skin, and deeply cleansing the pores. To top it off, it’s also formulated with centella asiatica to soothe any redness or inflammation.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Toning Solution

I’ve raved about the benefits of acid toning before and it’s never as useful as it is during the summer. Using an acid toner provides a gentle, effective chemical exfoliation on a regular basis, which is key to regulating oil production. Meant to be applied after cleansing, the toner sweeps away leftover impurities, prevents excess sebum production, and sloughs away dead skin cells. I’m currently using and loving The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid Toning Solution. It has 7% glycolic acid – one of the best chemical exfoliants – and it leaves the most satisfying tingle with every application. As with all acid toners, it’s best to only use it at night as chemical exfoliants can increase sun sensitivity. I also usually follow this solution with another toner to balance the pH level of my skin, as this solution is pretty acidic.

COSRX Low pH PHA Barrier Mist

Another summer staple for oily skin is a great face mist. Keeping the skin cool and refreshed throughout the day helps prevent excess sweating and oil production. The COSRX Low pH PHA Barrier Mist is amazing because it not only cools and refreshes the skin, but it helps keep your skin’s pH at the optimal level and help it fight off acne-causing bacteria.

ATRUE Spring Green Tea Watery Calming Cream

Finally, swap out your moisturizer for one that’s super lightweight. Heavy creams can feel suffocating in the heat of the summer, but consistently using a moisturizer to hydrate the skin is essential to regulating your oil production. See, if your skin doesn’t have the hydration it needs, it can lead to additional oil production as the skin tries to compensate for lack of moisture. ATRUE Spring Green Tea Watery Calming Cream is great for people with oily skin as it has an ultra-lightweight, breathable consistency and is formulated with black tea water to smooth out pores and regulate sebum production. This provides the moisture your skin needs while helping to regulate sebum production throughout the day.

Bottom Line

It may seem tempting to remove certain steps from your regular skin care routine in the summer, however, you’ll find that simply using products that regulate oil production is more beneficial and effective.
