How Women With Brown Skin Can Benefit From Using Vitamin C in Their Skin Care Routines

My skin has never been the same ever since I was introduced to the many benefits that come with vitamin C – and I can’t stop raving about it. Read on to find out how it can work for you too.

Vitamin C truly does wonders for any complexion, but it can be especially beneficial for skin that’s prone to hyperpigmentation or dark spots. Women of color are more likely to develop uneven skin, which is why I especially recommend we add this stuff to our routines ASAP!

Hyperpigmentation, which is essentially an overproduction of melanin on certain areas of the skin, is especially common among women with medium to dark skin tones. Anything can cause hyperpigmentation or dark spots (which is when skin cells start to produce more melanin), from a break in the skin (like acne or a cut) to too much sun exposure. Vitamin C works to prevent environmental damage to the skin either caused by the sun or other pollutants that can lead to darkening. It also works to lighten up any darkening that’s already developed.

But where does one even begin? I’d suggest starting with a vitamin C serum. It’s probably the best and most effective way to reap the benefits of vitamin C in your skin care. The Good (Skin) Days C’s The Day Serum is a powerful vitamin C serum that contains 10% pure vitamin C that works to lighten brown spots quickly while evening and brightening the skin. Then there’s the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Serum, which with 5% vitamin C is more of an entry-level formula for those new to the ingredient or with sensitive skin. I have rosacea and I have had no issues with it. The Some By Mi Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum contains 3% vitamin C and 75% galactomyces ferment filtrate, another brightening ingredient.

Tip: Layering a vitamin C serum with a facial sunscreen will help to further boost their defense barriers, plus protect your skin from amplified sun sensitivity.

If you’re going to use vitamin C at night, I’ve learned that the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Serum pairs incredibly well layered underneath the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask. This lightweight overnight mask features a unique pudding-like texture that’s super hydrating and works to stabilize the vitamin C, making it that much more effective. Together the two ingredients work to regenerate the skin while lightening any darkening caused by melanin overproduction.

You can also wear vitamin C during the day as well – I wear it day and night – but you should be cautious of overdoing it if you have sensitive skin.

Keep in mind that using too much of anything can cause adverse effects — and this is even more so if you have sensitive skin. Start off with a formula that features a low percentage of vitamin C and use gradually before easing yourself to using daily and if needed, twice a day.
