How can one at-home product that costs a fraction of the price of a professional facial produce similar results? Read on to learn more about the Amazon discovery that gives facial-esque skin any time.
After suffering with active acne for many, many years, I’m unfortunately left with marks from pimples past. I do everything in my power to get rid of them, be it obsessively applying SPF to prevent them from darkening, religiously following a chemical exfoliating routine composed primarily of azelaic acid, and even get routine yet pricey laser facials.
This was all until I discovered this portable high frequency laser device via an Into the Gloss interview with influencer Steph Shep. With a price tag of just $30, I decided to give it a spin. Little did I know it would quickly become my go-to treatment for active acne, large pores, and hyperpigmentation.
What is it?
This little guy is a portable high-frequency laser, which is essentially an at-home version of a device used in dermatologist’s and esthetician’s offices. Generally, it aims to prevent stubborn acne, shrink enlarged pores, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, decongest puffy eyes, rejuvenate the condition of the scalp, and nourish hair follicles for thicker, healthier hair growth.
According to Jellen Products, “the high frequency current firms and tones by causing an immediate circulation rush to the skin in addition to subtle tissue warming. These functions cause a very safe and natural contraction of the underlying blood vessels and tiny muscle groups. The dilation of the underlying vessels pushes away toxins, while the cells enjoy a feast of increased nutrients and hydrating volume. This result is an increase in blood circulation and cell renewal as well as increased production levels of collagen and elastin, which soften and smooth away wrinkles, reduce pore size and improve overall skin texture.”
If anti-aging is not your primary concern the brand notes, “The application of high frequency current to the skin also promotes a natural cleansing and antibacterial action that helps treat existing acne and prevents the onset of new acne. The enriched oxygen molecules produced by high frequency machines are safe and have been proven to be effective in helping to heal and restore the skin’s health. High frequency is used to treat a range of concerns from skin lesions, acne, waxing procedures and cold sores to fine lines, sagging skin and puffy eyes. How do you use it?
While the instructions on this might seem a little sketchy, I promise the results are anything but. Most importantly – do not use it for more than 10 minutes. Frankly, these are the only clear instructions that come with the device, so I suggest following them!
You’ll notice when you open it up, there are multiple attachments to choose from. If you’re going to cover the entire face, opt for a larger attachment. If you’re looking to zap a spot, use the smallest attachment. And if you’re looking to stimulate hair growth (because, yes, this machine does that, too!), add the comb attachment.
To dupe my expensive laser treatments, I use one of the two larger attachments. I begin by cleaning the glass piece with 75% isopropyl alcohol, and prepping my skin with a gentle wash and a face mist, to keep my skin lubricated, allowing the machine to glide over with ease. I turn the machine on low, touch to my hand to ensure it’s not too much, and then go straight for my face. Once on my face, I turn it up within the limits of what I deem bearable, and then I start my facial. I make strokes starting from the inside of my face, going outward. I give 10 seconds to my forehead, 10 seconds to the left side of my face, and 10 seconds to the right. If I have a large, stubborn pimple, I often switch out the attachments to the smallest one, and zap my pimple directly for a full 10 seconds.
What should you expect?
While using the device, expect low levels of a tingling and stinging sensation – as long as it’s bearable, you’re in the clear. But what about in terms of results?
I personally purchased this to give me clear, glowing skin, and it does just that. As my skin is oily, the laser zaps any bacteria, dirt, or sebum sitting on my skin. Because of this, I immediately notice a reduction in the size of my pores, along with reduced blackheads (both in size and in darkness of the blackhead itself). Because this is also a pro at kick-starting collagen production, you might also notice fine lines and wrinkles diminishing, or your skin simply looking more plump.
The Bottom Line
While I might use this for acne, some use it for anti-aging treatments and some use it to help hair growth. It works for such a wide variety of problems and can bring healthy skin to all, making this $30 buy my all-time favorite Amazon purchases!
