Dear Soko: I’m Getting Married! How Should I Prep My Skin for the Big Day?

How early should you start prepping your skin for your wedding? Welcome to Dear Soko, a series dedicated to answering your biggest skin care questions with advice from Soko Glam’s skin experts. Whether you’re confused about specific ingredients or what you need to do to achieve healthier skin overall, these experts are here to guide you.

This week’s question comes from commenter Laura who asked: “My wedding is coming up in a few months. I’d really love to have you recommend a skin care routine in prep for the wedding.”
Here, a Soko Glam skin expert’s answer:

Dear Laura,
Oh the pressure is on for this one! It can be a bit nerve-racking to know that all the eyes will be on you and that you’ll be posing for countless photos.
While your makeup look is important, it’s the state of your skin that will determine how well foundation and all the rest applies.
Did I cause more panic? Don’t worry – I’m here to help!
Ideally you should start prepping your skin a year out. This gives you ample time to see the professionals you need to see and then introduce products into your routine with trial and error. For example, this might be a good time to try a powerful product that your skin needs time to get used to, or may not like at all, like a retinol or a vitamin C serum.
Make sure you’re using products that are best-suited for your skin type (Not sure what yours is? Take our Skin Quiz!) and ingredients that will target your personal skin concerns.
Leading up to the big day, two of the most important steps in your routine will be an exfoliant and sunscreen.
Exfoliation will keep skin smooth and radiant by removing dead skin cells, power cleanse your pores (depending on the acid), and promote cell regeneration and a more even skin tone.

Wearing SPF will help prevent enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging.
When applying products, don’t forget your neck and chest, especially if these areas will be exposed on your wedding day. They are often neglected yet they age just as much as your face.
While it’s great to have a routine, keep in mind that sometimes your skin concerns may stem from other causes (i.e. medication, lifestyle, etc), so it’s its always best to consult with your medical professionals, eat a balanced diet, and drink lots of water.
Something I do not encourage is jumping into a whole new routine one month out. It could be the greatest thing to happen to your skin or it can be the most devastating. If you’re on a time crunch, I would advise seeing a dermatologist for a professional treatment.
