If you live almost anywhere in North America, you know and feel how insanely frigid it is right now. The high today in New York City is a nice 24℉, and aside from our hands literally freezing up within five minutes of walking outside, the precious skin on our faces is also having a rough time with this whole deep freeze situation. When it’s this extremely cold, your skin’s moisture barrier becomes damaged and your skin can become extra red.
We’ve gone over ways to help combat these issues—things like using moisturizers with ceramides to soothing serums for redness— but there are some drastic measures that need to be made to save your skin when temperatures dip below “comfortable coldness.”
This is where hacks come into play. One of my (this is Renee, btw) go-to hacks is spiking my moisturizer with a good amount of face oil. While we normally advise doing this to your nighttime moisturizer, when it’s freezing outside, I always do this before applying moisturizer during the day. In the morning, I place two to three drops of the Farsali Rose Gold Elixir into my Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream. It adds an extra dose of hydration and ensures that my skin won’t parch up before I apply my cushion. I almost never have flaky skin throughout the day, even if the coldest of winds are hitting it.
Tina likes to use sleeping packs in the morning. “Blasting the heat indoors to fight the freezing weather outside has been good for my soul but not for my skin. Recently, I’ve resolved this issue by applying a sleeping pack in the morning: after I tone and apply essence, I put on an emulsion, followed by a generous amount of a hydrating sleeping pack before I put on SPF.
Not all sleeping packs are heavy and greasy, so using a super lightweight, hydrating sleeping pack as a second moisturizer has helped my skin (and makeup) make it through the work day.”
