Erborian Elixir au Ginseng review

The Serum You Can Immediately Feel Plumping Your Skin

Read our Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng review and see why this special anti-aging serum/essence hybrid is the real deal when it comes to softening fine lines and plumping up your skin.

No exaggeration, I’ve never been more excited to try a product than I was to try the Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng. Ever since I started here at Soko Glam, I’ve heard straight up magical things about this elixir. Yes, this isn’t a serum or a ampoule, it’s an elixir. This particular product prompted us to write an entire article explaining exactly what elixirs are.
And after reading that article and finding out that elixirs are basically potions that are thicker than an essence but thinner than a cream, and are made to specifically help brighten skin and make it more moisturized, I was literally dying to try this product. Here’s all you need to know about the Erborian Elixir au Ginseng and my experience using it for two weeks:

The product:

Since this is an elixir, you can’t really categorize the this product into a pre-labeled box. The best way I can describe the Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng is that it’s like a heavier serum but with the lightness of an essence (it uses actives to fight skin concerns like a serum but it infuses moisture and plumps skin like an essence).
The consistency of the product can be credited to the unique way it’s manufactured. On the bottle, it says the product is a “youth micellar” and the cofounder of Erborian, Katalin Berenyi, explains that the way the micellar droplets are created in this elixir is a detailed process. “We say it’s micellar, but it’s not like the micelles of the micellar water,” she says. “Actually, the micelles of the elixir describe the very tiny droplets and the technology behind it. We do an additional step when we make the essence and explode the texture into very tiny droplets.”
This explosion of molecules is what gives the serum its milky white color. “It’s white because it scatters the light into all directions,” says Berenyi. “And since the droplets are so small, it allows for instant penetration into the skin. You put it on and your skin instantly drinks it in because the droplets can really get into the skin very quickly.”

The ingredients:

Aside from the Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng‘s impressive consistency, it boasts a list of ingredients that really work to provide great anti-aging results. Let’s start with the ingredient mentioned in the name of the product: ginseng. Ginseng is an ingredient renowned for its skin-smoothing abilities.
But Erborian doesn’t use just any ginseng in this serum—it uses six-year-old Korean panax ginseng root extract, and Berenyi says that harvesting the ginseng extract at the exact right time (six years) is critical to the effectivity of the serum. “It’s the best of what we can give to your skin. The ginseng builds up actives for six years, and after six years the root won’t provide nourishment,” she says. “At the end of the six years, the ginseng has 250 actives and it supercharges your skin. This lets the serum adapt to your skin concern and balance out what you need.”
On top of ginseng to help smooth out fine lines, the Erborian elixir also contains licorice root extract to help brighten skin and add a nice glow. I also love how the composition of this serum contains 20 percent oils to impart serious moisture to the skin. One of the top ingredients is sweet almond oil, followed by sesame seed oil, and soybean oil. This high volume of oils also allows for a what Berenyi calls a “tensing” or tightening effect that infuses dry cell structures with moisture, thus reducing the appearance of lines and lifting saggy skin. “It’s almost impossible to include 20 percent oil in a serum, but with our technology it’s possible,” says Berenyi. “The oils provide great nourishment and a tensing effect inside the skin.”

My experience:

I truly love this serumand it takes a lot for me to love a serum (I can like a lot of things). Here’s why I love this serum:
  1. 1.

I have really dry skin and I tend to need serums that are more of a thick emulsion than a thin watery liquid. The Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng is a nice and hefty serum that isn’t too heavy. I simply spread a few pumps over my face and it instantly absorbs while also leaving a nice dewiness to keep me moisturized and make me feel like I actually put something on my skin:

I can literally feel it working seconds after I put it on. I’m not overselling this, either. The serum is so packed with skin-boosting ingredients that right after I put it on I can see that my skin is a tiny bit more lifted and plumped. Immediately after it absorbs, my skin feels baby soft and my chronic tired face has more luminosity and life.
  2. 3.

After using it every night for two weeks, my redness and pigmentation has significantly decreased and the fine lines on my forehead and around my mouth are much less noticeable. (I would give it a good two weeks before you start seeing actual results, so be patient.)I love putting this serum on and then sealing it in with a heavy moisturizer, like the Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream to add even more oils and hydration. I go to sleep (with a sticky face) and when I wake up—thanks to the combination of the Erborian serum and my moisturizer—my fine lines aren’t visible at all. It’s a beautiful thing.
  3. 4.

It smells so good. The Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng smells luxurious. It has that slightly floral, expensive smell that La Mer and La Prairie products have but is much less pricey.
My one gripe: This serum has a somewhat high price tag and you need a good amount of it to actually cover your face. The instructions on the box say to apply “two pearl-sized drops” of it to your face and neck, but you need more than two to just cover your face. I use about three to adequately cover my face and another one for my neck, and applying four pumps of this serum every day will make me fly through the entire bottle fast.

Bottom line:

The Erborian Elixir Au Ginseng is a super luxe, unique serum-and-essence-in-one that I think is worth the price. Thanks to its different and effective technology, you can feel it seeping into your skin and working right away. While it won’t get rid of fine lines completely and forever, when used daily, it keeps skin plumped and bright so that wrinkles are always less visible and skin just looks healthier and more youthful. It’s not Botox in a bottle, but it’s pretty darn close.
