Upcycle your empties—how to eliminate skin care waste

Don’t let your bathroom trash can fill with empty skin care and makeup waste. Instead, cosmetic products can be recycled and upcycled to support sustainability.

Spring and Earth Day are fast approaching, and Soko Glam has the health of the planet on its mind. When it comes to skin care, many times, items are packaged in a way that makes them difficult to recycle. Luckily, companies that practice and encourage sustainability make it easier to recycle products that you otherwise wouldn’t know what to do with. TerraCycle® is a social enterprise on a mission to eliminate the idea of waste.

As a passionate member of the skin care community, I tend to produce a lot of skin care waste, whether it’s an empty bottle that I used to the last drop, or a gifted product that didn’t resonate with me. Programs like TerraCycle exist to safely and effectively recycle waste that isn’t as typical as the Diet Coke you can just toss in the office recycling bin.

That’s why Soko Glam has joined forces with Terracycle to help skincare junkies recycle their empties. They’ve teamed up with Terracycle’s Zero Waste bin program to make sure empty bottles and products can be recycled and get a second life as material used to make things like parks and playgrounds.

The TerraCycle solution

TerraCycle is unlike traditional municipal recyclers, instead focused on a wide range of waste streams that are typically not locally recyclable. This allows for products that normally wouldn’t be recycled to contribute to the difference in our environmental sustainability. TerraCycle reuses, upcycles, and recycles waste instead of landfilling it. This moves waste from a “linear system” to a circular one, allowing it to keep cycling in our economy.

TerraCycle is where sustainability meets high-energy innovation. The beauty industry has the opportunity to contribute to the global sustainability goal, and partner with organizations like TerraCycle to easily and effectively make a difference, so why wouldn’t we?

How does it work?

Terracycle offers free, national recycling programs to make it easy to eliminate waste. To date, over 202 million people in 21 countries have helped to collect and recycle enough waste to raise over 44 million dollars for charities around the world. TerraCycle offers a range of national, easy-to-use recycling platforms allowing everyone to #RecycleEverything.

Free recycling programs

TerraCycle offers free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers and retailers to help collect and recycle that hard-to-recycle waste, like skin care bottles and makeup products. Consumers simply choose the free program you’d like to join, and start collecting in their community. After downloading free shipping labels, waste can be sent to TerraCycle to be recycled effectively.

Zero Waste Box platform

TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Box™ platform allows consumers to recycle almost any type of waste, including those that wouldn’t traditionally be accepted to recycle. Choose the waste stream you’d like to recycle, purchase your preferred box size, collect your waste, and send it to TerraCycle to be repurposed (shipping is included).

Loop

Loop is a program developed by TerraCycle, offering day-to-day products in refillable containers that would usually come in non-reusable plastic. The products are from trusted brands (including skin care and beauty brands) and can be delivered to your front door. Loop will even pick up your empty containers and ship new ones to you.
