Celebrity Makeup Artist Min Min Ma’s 3 Easy DIY Skin Care Hacks For Better-Looking Makeup

It’s time for skin care hacks for makeup! Have you ever spent a full hour in front of the mirror doing your makeup just to notice everything start to flake and peel afterwards? Nothing’s worse than spending all that time contouring, highlighting, and baking, just to have your look ruined by dry skin or chapped lips!

While pilling makeup can easily be avoided with a good and consistent skin care routine, we understand that sometimes things happen. Maybe you’re on vacation and you forgot to pack an exfoliator. Or maybe you’ve just pulled an all nighter and have bags so dark that even your favorite concealer won’t cover them. That’s life. That’s why we met up with celebrity makeup artist Min Min Ma to learn her favorite three tips for preparing the skin before makeup application.
Min Min has worked with celebrities like Meghan Markle and Hailee Steinfeld, so you can be sure we were super pumped to learn the hacks that she uses to help her celeb clients look fabulous on a daily basis. Plus, they’re all super simple and only need ingredients you already have laying around your house. Only have a few minutes to spare in the morning? No problem!
But, because they are DIY, make sure that you patch test everything first. This is an extra precaution just to make sure everything works with your skin!
Hack #1: Coffee for under-eye puffiness

For this hack all you need is coffee beans, filtered water, and two empty tea bags. Pour the grounded coffee into a small bowl and mix in a little bit of water at a time until you have a good paste-like consistency. The stronger the coffee, the stronger the mix will be at combatting under-eye puffiness. Scoop the mixture into the empty tea bags. You don’t need more than a good spoonful for each.
Place the two tea bags on top of your eyes for around three minutes. The longer they’re there, the more effective they’ll be. But be prepared for some staining around your eyes once you take them off! This is totally normal and a side effect from the coffee. It’ll easily come of once you cleanse, tone, and moisturize afterwards.
This hack works because topically applying coffee does the same it does for your brain when you drink it. It helps you feel and look awake and refreshed! The caffeine acts as an anti-inflammatory for the skin, and constricts blood vessels to help get rid of those bags. Just remember to not get any of the paste in your eyes.
Hack #2: Crushed aspirin for redness

If you recently plucked your eyebrows and the surrounding skin is a little sensitive, then this hack is for you. Don’t just apply makeup on top of that red area! It’s also great for people with sensitive skin, redness, food allergies, or rosacea. This solution can be prepared ahead of time and stored in your purse or medicine cabinet for future use. Just make sure to shake it up before use every time. Min Min uses a travel-sized plastic bottle great for getting through TSA. She carries this around with her in her makeup kit at all times.
Grab some aspirin and a small container filled with filtered cold water. Crush a few aspirin (around 3-4 depending on the amount of water you use) and mix the powder into the water. Using your hands, pat the liquid onto the red area the same way you would with a watery toner. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then wash it off afterwards. If left on, the aspirin will form a thin paste on your skin, making it a poor base for makeup application.
This hack works because aspirin has great anti-inflammatory properties that work once absorbed into the skin.
Hack #3: Coffee & honey for chapped lips

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, coffee is amazing. This time we’re using dried grounded coffee as an exfoliator. All you need is grounded coffee and raw honey.  Mix the two ingredients together on your palm or in a bowl. You only need a tiny amount because you’re just going to be using it to get rid of the dead skin on your lips. We don’t recommend such rough physical exfoliation for the rest of your face!
The paste should be a fairly thick consistency. So the more coffee you add, the better it will be at scrubbing away all that dry skin. Rub it around your lips for 30 seconds and you should be good to go. Get ready for baby soft lips. Just be sure to use some lip balm after wiping it off!
Afterwards
After you’ve done one (or all three!) of these hacks, don’t forget to do the rest of your skin care. We used the Neogen Real Fresh Green Tea Cleansing Stick, Acwell Licorice pH Balancing Cleansing Toner, and Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream. Want to see the makeup look Min Min created?
