E Nature: Energizing Natural Korean Skincare

By September 28, 2016

Stories From a Curator is a column by Charlotte Cho, the curator and cofounder of Soko Glam. As a licensed esthetician and the author of The Little Book of Skin Care, Cho gives a glimpse into her discovery process and what brands and products make the cut for the curated site.

It’s no secret that natural Korean skincare has been my curation focus for the past year. Plus, with winter just around the corner, I was specifically on the hunt for natural Korean beauty products that can keep my skin protected and hydrated through crisp fall mornings and untouched through piercing cold winter winds.

When I came across E Nature’s Birch Juice line, I quickly recognized that I had found a brand that was doing something special. While E Nature is still a smaller, niche brand in Korea, their entire birch line, from the hydro mist to the sleeping pack, uses over 65% (and up to 91%!!!) birch sap in their formula (in place of water), which is a serious skincare nod to effective ingredients and results.

In fact, the last time any Korean skincare brand substituted water for a more active ingredient (and did it well) was when Su:m37 launched their Water-full line, formulated with bamboo sap instead of H2O. So I was excited to see how well my skin would slurp up this new exciting ingredient, Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice!

Quick Tip: You can tell by looking at the label what ingredients dominate the formula: They are listed out in descending order, that is, the first one listed has the highest percentage in the formula—and many times you’ll see water at the top of the names. When it comes to E Nature’s Birch Juice line though, it’s Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice that sits at the top of every list.

What Is Birch Juice?
Birch juice is a sap that is tapped directly from birch trees. It’s a relatively new ingredient that is trending in the beauty and the health/wellness space. There was even some buzz about why birch juice is going to be “the next” coconut water, thanks to it’s hydrating effects and electrolytes when consumed.

On the skin, its 11 different amino acids, sugars and minerals go beyond providing great nutrients–it also has amazing moisturizing properties. Birch juice is able to mimic your skin’s natural NMF (natural moisturizing factor), which helps retaining moisture and maintaining a positive oil-moisture balance in the skin.

This magic power is especially important on colder months, when our skin produces less oil and gets exposed to cold winds, dry air and freezing temperatures. I can tell by my own experience that this is when my fine lines are so much more visible—not to say I get a bit flaky as well.

Why Do I Love It?
When I tested the birch line I noticed it was something that not only hydrated but softened my skin. I thoroughly enjoyed the super light fragrance, which smelled subtly of birch water (which is very similar to coconut water, if you’ve never smelled birch juice before).

Beyond Birch Juice

E Nature is not just a brand that is solely focused on birch sap. They have a lot of other promising lines that focus on natural ingredients such as moringa extract (derived from a plant that is known for its purifying effects) and marshmallow extract (derived from the flower, not the sweet treat) that they use for their product lines that I’m currently exploring and enjoying.

I’m also in love with the fact that E Nature completely revamped their packaging so that it is sleek, sturdy and durable. A lot of their product offerings come in pump form, which you know by now is my favorite way to dispense skincare products—it’s the most hygienic way! Other notable pluses: The brand is cruelty free, they use eco-friendly packaging and their formulas do not have parabens!
