Dear Soko: How do You Maintain a Skin Care Routine Without Running Water?

How do you do skin care with no water? Welcome to Dear Soko, a new series dedicated to answering your biggest skin care questions with advice from Soko Glam’s skin experts. Whether you’re confused about specific ingredients or what you need to do to achieve healthier skin overall, these experts are here to guide you.

This week’s question comes from our dedicated reader Barb, who has asked the following on our last Dear Soko about switching up your skin care routine when you’re under the weather:
“I was wondering if you could do an article on what kind of skin routine you could do while camping where there isn’t guaranteed running water. Any time I veer away from my routine, I break out. Are there some products you’d recommend for this?”

Hi Barb,
*deep appreciative sigh* The great outdoors…

Although the thought of being one with nature is extremely appealing, I can actually only do this five hours at a time…I’m more of a lake house kinda gal. With that said, I’ve never actually pitched a tent, but this doesn’t mean I can’t point you in the right direction!

The thing I can relate to is reluctantly veering away from your tried-and-true routine. Whenever I do, I always feel like I look like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, but I’m pretty sure it’s just me.

With limited access to clean water, multi-tasking products will be star; most notably cleansing waters.

To avoid attracting bugs, I would advise to also stick to fragrance-free items. Son & Park Beauty Water and Klavuu Pure Pearlsation Marine Collagen Micro Cleansing Water are two great options. Another great thing about these is that they can double as your toner! First, saturate a cotton pad and gently wipe down your skin, neck and décolleté. Then follow with a second layer as your toner.

The Missha Near Skin Simple Therapy Essence Lotion will serve as your essence and moisturizer, and then follow up with an SPF in the morning.

Keeping your routine short and sweet will be ideal. If you need a mid-day refresher, pack a mist! If your skin becomes irritated, you can also consider doing a sheet mask to help soothe and hydrate.

The thing I would avoid is more intensive treatments that involve stronger acids, as this will increase your skin’s sensitivities from spending extended periods of time outdoors.
Warmly,
Your Skin Expert
